After waiting some time at the Council meeting, Lancelot came looking for Sir Ector, to be sure nothing was amiss. When he got to the door, he knocked on it, and waited patiently for an answer, despite his growing irritability. It was, as usual, kept well in check.

The door opened and Gaius the physician stood there with a serious expression.
"Sir Lancelot, may I help you? Have you come to speak to Sir Ector?"

"I have come on behalf of King Arthur to enquire after him. he is worried he is to miss the council meeting, and after his health generally." Lancelot said, with a slight bow to the physician.

"Ah yes, of course. The meeting. Sir Ector has not been well, unfortunately. The streses of his post have taken their toll, and he is a man in his middle years," Gaius explained. "I advised him to rest a little but he will be down presently. The recent troubles have been most vexing, of course. And there was terrible news from Sir Ectors wife."

"Oh, from his wife?" Lancelot mused aloud, his interest immediately piqued. "Is there anything I can do that may help?"

"It seems unlikely," Gaius sighed, as he opened hte door more fully to let Lancelot enter the chamber. "Sir Ector's middle son was attacked by Saxon raiders and severely wounded. He has taken a fever and lies gravely ill, according to the letter from Sir Ector's lady."

"How awful. Those pillaging bastards." Lancelot said, with a sharp tone, before his look shot to Gaius and turned somewhat apologetic, "Forgive the forceful words, the idea of something to dreadful happening fills me with fury." He explained, "Sir Ector would no doubt rather be with his family than here." Lancelot said, as he entered the room, and decided he may as well wait until Sir Ector was ready, and help him down.

"Yes, quite, but a man cannot abandon his duties," Gaius murmured.
Sir Ector sat on his bed looking decidedly pale and sick. He had huge black circles beneath his eyes but looked up when he saw Lancelot.
"Greetings, sir. You must forgive me. I heard what Gaius told you. I have been ill in recent days and then, when I received my wife's letter, I grew worse."
He broke off to cough after every few words and it was clear that he was not in the best of health.
"The realm needs me and yet I long to be with my wife and sons."
"Indeed, I was obliged to spend a couple of days abed," he said, between coughs.

"Sir, you seem very unwell." Lancelot said, with a frown and a look that could be interpreted as concern, "Please, let me go back and tell the council you are too unwell to attend, I can come back afterwards and inform you of what has happened, if you would like."

Sir Ector shook his head.
"I cannot. The council must hear what I have to say. I was too unwell last night to speak with Arthur and he at least must hear the bad news. But it is better if the council hears it too."

"I could relay the message for you?" He suggested easily.

The older knight got to his feet.
No. You are kind, Sir Lancelot, but I must do my duty. As I have always done. I wil not shirk from it now. I can manage for a little while. A drop of Lothian water of life will ease my throat."

"Then at least let me assist you down to the chambers." Lancelot suggested, thinking the stubbornness not worth it, but thought he would act similarly.

"Of course. Gaius was to assist me but you are young and strong. I would feel happier accepting your assistance. Gaius is older than me."
Sir Ector was still coughing as he walked over to Lancelot.
"Thank you. Your parents must be very proud of you."
He accepted the small glass Gaius offered, filled with an amber liquid that Lancelot knew was popular in Lothian. Ector drank, coughed a little, then drank some more.
"Have you ever tried it, Sir Lancelot? It is liquid fire but it does soothe a sore throat," the older knight confided.
