"Well, we've become friends rather quickly." Dinadan laughed. "Although it's better than becoming friends slowly, naturally, and both are better than never becoming friends with people at all."

"Oh yes, definitely. We don't bother with long introductions among my people, at least not most of the time. That's fine for those of you who live in castles, but we hardly ever do, at least not all the time. So it's different when you live among the woodlands and almost everyone is equal."

Dinadan examined her for a moment, trying to gauge what her intentions were. "Yes, that's probably true, life at court is different from life outside of it."

He guesses that her intentions are entirely innocent and she has no intentions besides being friendly.
"Yes, court is so much more formal, from what I've seen. And you all have a different status. I don't like that."

"Well, we all need leaders, do we not?" Dinadan offered. "Our society would lack any sense of order without a King."

"Oh yes, of course, but there is a stronger...what is the word that Lady Viviane uses?"
Seren paused to think about it for a moment.
"Higharc, no hierarchy? I think that's right, Yes, it's not just a king, there's lords and knights and everything, and then men-at-arms and servants and farmers and all of them have to do what their lords say so they aren't answerable just to the king. After we've done our training, we druids answer only to the chief of our tribe, and to the Chief Druid - that's Lady Viviane, who is the chief of my tribe too - or to the King himself."

"Yes, but in a system like that are people not more likely to break the law?" Dinadan asked. "If there are no immediate figures of authority, they will be less motivated to contribute to society."

She looked at him in confusion.
"I don't know. We druids live in smaller communities and we have ways of dealing with trouble that you lack. So I suppose it's not such a problem. Lady Viviane can be most authoritative when she wishes. I've seen her angry."
She giggled.

"She doesn't seem the most authoritative person if the memory of her at her angriest inspires laughter." Dinadan pointed out.

"Yes, but I know her well, and I never did anything to make her angry," Seren pointed out. "It's different. I was a little frightened of her when I was still a novice in training."

"I was a little intimidated by king Mark when I first arrived at his court as well." Dinadan agreed. "But he is a kind enough King once you get to know him."

"Oh. I've never met him," Seren admitted. "But that's good. I shall remember. Arthur is a good king too, but he's young, so he doesn't seem very like a king. He seems like me, in a way."

Dinadan laughed. "In what way would that be?" he asked.

"Because he's young and friendly at not at all formal, unless he has to be. It's just hard to think of him as the man who was chosen by the gods to rule over us all," Seren confided. "He's hardly more than a boy!"

"Fair enough." Dinadan nodded. "How old are you, Seren, if you consider yourself hardly more than a girl?"
