"I seek to winkle out the pirates from their coves and destroy their bases. For that I need ships capable of carrying fighting men." replied Mark.

"You may have the use of my men and ships, certainly. But about this alliance, you spoke of. Were you intending to propose that you marry my daughter?"

"Either myself or my nephew Tristram." replied Mark. "I have need of a wife as I would prefer to give Cornwall an heir of my body. But as it stands, Tristram of Lyonesse is my heir."

Hoel was silent for a moment as he thought about it.
"Tristram would be closer in age to my Isolde. But why is it that you have no wife as yet, Mark?"

"I have had no reason to marry as yet." replied Mark smiling. "At 34 I trust I am not too old to do so. Tristram is twenty. Still you already have a marriage alliance with Lyonesse with your sister married to King Meliodas. Their two sons are your nephews, but not mine."

"That is true," Hoel agreed. "A match with yourself would bring my daughter and her children closer to the Cornish throne. But still, it interests me that you were in no great hurry to produce an heir. But that is your business, not mine. You would be an excellent match for my daughter. And yet...surely it has occured to you that there must be many fathers holding out for the greater prize for their daughters? I have not heard that Arthur Pendragon has yet taken a wife."

"Arthur will marry for political reasons no doubt. Is he likely to need to marry into Brittany Hoel? He no doubt knows he has your loyalty and friendship already. No..he will marry to bind some great lord in Britain to his cause."
Mark filled his goblet and smiled.
"And yet Cornwall requires your friendship and assistance. And from my vantage you would do well to bind Cornwall to your efforts to resist the Franks. A certain alliance between us with your daughter as Queen of Cornwall would be far more beneficial rather than hold out for perhaps the remote hope that your daughter would one day be Arthur's queen."

King Hoel took a sip from his goblet.
"You are right, of course, but there must be many who seek union with the House of Pendragon even though they are already allied to Arthur. What man would not wish the future High King to be his own blood kin? I was merely speculating, as any man would. Arthur's choice of bride is of interest to all. The kings of Cameliard and Listeneise have daughters, I believe. I would not be surprised if their fathers are already scheming on their behalf. But no matter. Isolde shall marry you and with my blessing."

Mark smiled.
"I shall prove a good husband to your daughter Hoel and hopefully we shall give you many grand-children. I will of course need to meet my future wife. We can discuss our military concerns at another time."

"SO we can. You may meet Isolde tomorrow. I know she will want to look her best for you when she meets her betrothed for the first time."
Hoel allowed himself to return Mark's smile.
"You know how much stock women place in such things."

"Indeed. My sister was the same." replied Mark. "I shall look forward to meeting Isolde."

"And so you shall. Tomorrow. For now, let us rest and eat and drink."
OOC - move forward to the next day?

Mark inclined his head and smiled. "Lead on my lord King. I am famished."
OOC: Next day it is.

The next morning, a message comes to Mark at his chamber. It is delivered by a page in Hoel's colours.
"Princess Isolde sends word that she is ready to meet you," the boy announced. "She awaits you in the great hall. She sends you this as a token of her esteem and bids you wear it today."
The boy handed over a lady's scarf. It was white and embroidered with tiny blue flowers.

Mark smiled and raised it to his lips.
"The lady bids me does she? She expects the King of Cornwall to fall at her feet?"
He flipped the boy a silver and laughed.
"Tell the Lady Isolde I shall be along presently and that I shall wear her favor as she requests."
