Gawain, the eldest son of King Lot, and heir to Lothian and the Orkneys, arrives to see his father the morning after Beltane.

Lot stands at the window, looking out. "Do you ever stop to wonder what could have happened? If things had gone a bit differently, this would now all be ours. " He turns, and smiles at his dear son, his pride. " How do you enjoy Camelot?"

"I like it well," Gawain said. "The fact that there are more than a few beautiful women present only enhances the experience. It doesn't trouble me that it's not ours, father. Lothian and Orkney are enough for me. Arthur will make a worthy king, with your support and guidance. You and he will be brothers soon enough, when you are married to the Lady Morgause. He'll need your support, and he'll see me taking part in this grand quest of his. We will prosper, my lord. I know it."

"Who's 'we', Gawain?", Lot asks, concern in his pitch. "I hope you mean our family. Arthur is our ally now, and brother soon. But remember, once he was our enemy. " He grabs his son's arm, and holds it out, his next to it. "Blood, Gawain! It's blood that matters." He let go, cool and at rest again. "I am glad you go on Arthur's quest. I want you to succeed. Bring fame and renown to Lothian and Orkney. " His voice is softer now. " You will make me proud, I know it."

Gawain was the kind of man who smiled often and he did so now.
"I will, father. And of course I meant our family. I know that family means everything to you. I swear to you, I don't forget the past, but that was Uther's doing, not Arthur's. I rather like him."

"He seems like a good boy", Lot mumbled. " I want you to excel. Show them all what we are able to. And then you will meet your new mother, once you return."

"My new mother is close to my own age," Gawain laughed. "I've only seen her from afar but she's very beautiful. I wish you joy of her. Speaking of which, I met a young lady the other day, Dindrane, daughter of King Pellinore. Could you seek out her father regarding a possible match between us? I believe she would make me an admirable wife and Listeneise is not so far from Lothian. King Pellinore would make us a useful ally."

A ghastly smile disfigurs the Kings face, unholy glee coming to the surface. "You think like you are supposed to, now. I will seek out her father and invite them to dine with us tomorrow. " He walked to the window again. "Did you seek a woman, Gawain? One that would make a good alliance?" There is doubt in his tone, and he turns to his son. "Or are you in love?"

"Neither. I ran across the lady by chance at my archery and I enjoyed her company. I am not blinded by love, my lord, but knowing that the lady's father is the great King Pellinore, it would be foolish of me to disregard a potential alliance. I believe she likes me well enough and I have high hopes that I could make her love me."
He grinned.
"Perhaps she and I will be able to spend time together on Arthur's quest. I noticed that she volunteered herself."

"She volunteered?" He sighs. "Son, is she a warrior-woman?" He rubs his hands. "I would like a nice girl for a daughter-in-law, not some crazed Amazon."

Gawain laughed.
"I don't think she is a warrior woman, but she's a decent archer. That's not the same. You could not fail to be charmed, my lord."

"I hope so." He nods, lost in his train of thought. "I will go see her father immediately, then. This is an urgent matter. " He walks over, and puts a necklace in his sons hand. It seems to be made from iron, rough and crude. A silver symbol is on it. "This wcomes from one of your ancestors. He crafted the chain from the steel of the blades of his fallen enemies, the symbol from their womens silver." Lot closes Gawains fingers around it. "It will protect you."

GAwain held onto the object. He was touched but thought the gesture superstitious.
"TYhank you, my lord. I will not forget this. I know I will be safe with the amulet to protect me."
