The guards show him in to the solar where Geraint waits. He is a tall, thin man but he smiles faintly as he sees his visitor.
"Mark of Cornwall. Welcome. I had not expected you to visit me here. Will you take a drink?"

"I am on my way back to Cornwall, after visiting Arthur, cousin. And yes...wine if you don't mind" replied Mark.

Geraint handed Mark a cup of red wine. He had a solemn face, rarely smiling.
"Here. 'Tis from France. So why is it that you have come to visit me?"

"Familial fidelity." smiled Mark. "After all you are my first cousin."
He took a sip of wine.
"Have you met our new High King yet?"

"Only at his coronation. I was unwell recently and unable to travel to the recent celebrations. I would certainly have gone if I could. After all, the king is my direct lord. I hold my lands through him, as Melodias holds Lyonesse through you. Why do you ask?"
Geraint looked over his cup at Mark as he spoke and there was curiosity in his pale eyes.

"I was interested in your opinion of him. He seems to me to be more interested in adventure and tales of chivalry than in ruling the realm. You may have seen another side of him that I am unaware of."
Mark took another sip of wine.
"You know he has gone questing with a number of his knights including my nephew?"

Geraint shook his head,
"I did not. I cannot blame Arthur for seeking adventure. He is half a boy still and questing is a young man's pasttime. What is our young king searching for?"

"The Thirteen Treasures of Britain I'm told." replied Mark.
"Questing may be a young man's pastime, but it should not be the pastime of a King."

Geraint gazed into his cup for a while as if scrying, then he looked up at Mark.
"Then you would condemn a boy of sixteen to spent the whole of his life at his capital listening to tales of adventures had by his knights? That is a hard thing for any boy to do."

"He has to be more than just a boy." replied Mark. "He is a king. He will do more than just sit in his capital, if he rules as a King should. The time will come when circumstances will require him to fight and to travel. I have had to. Plenty of time for adventure, if that's what he wants. I have misgivings about our King disappearing, perhaps for months at a time in search of items that may not even exist."

"The Thirteen Treasures are fabled throughout Britain," said Geraint. "But why do you doubt their existence? I did not take you for a skeptic, Mark. I thought you a true Christian who would believe in holy relics."

Mark gave a small smile. "Christian I am cousin, but we both know that holy relics exist everywhere. Some are of dubious authenticity. I often wonder for example, how many crosses could be built from all the reputed splinters of the true cross that are venerated in various churches in Britain, France and even as far away as Rome and Jerusalem.
"The treasures may exist, or they may not. Even if they do, Arthur has knights and servants that could hunt for these as you say, 'fabled' treasures."

"You have the right of that. I have had pardoners and pedlars offer me enough fingerbones of Saint Joseph of Arimathea to make three hands," Geraint sighed. "But Arthur clearly believes in these artefacts. I am sorry, Mark, but I cannot blame our king for wishing to find these things for himself. I believe it shows true piety."
