The place is Britain and the time is the Dark Ages. Now the Roman occupation has ended, the land has once more split into small kingdoms, each ruled by a king. But the kings of Britain are am ambitious bunch and each one sought to increase his own holdings. One of these kings, Uther Pendragon managed to unite the south and east of Britain under his banner. The kings were allowed to keep their lives and their titles, so long as they swore fealty to Uther as High King.
Uther eventually died of infected wounds received when fighting King Vortigern and his Saxon allies in the east. His steward Sir Ector ruled Uther's lands for seven years until on a boy named Arthur miraculously pulled a sword from a stone. Revealed as Uther's son and heir, Arthur has now been crowned.
The young King Arthur has formed an uneasy alliance with the kings of Orkney and Gore, to whom he has promised his sisters in marriage, but there are other kings of lands in Wales, Scotland and Northern England who have yet to support the wizard Merlin's claim that Arthur is destined to rule as the High King of all England.
