Not moving too far away from Teilo's light, Mark began looking around. He wondered what the material was so he picked out a clump and went over to examine it first.

The material was wool and the weave and colour reminded Mark of Telio's cloak, except it was rotting. The druidic presence, as spoken of by Telio, was thus confirmed. A woollen bundle lay close to the water. Something seemed to be bundled up inside it.

Mark beckoned to Dinas to follow him. Spying the wooden bundle near the water, they moved over to it. Whispering to Dinas to keep watch, Mark knelt and examined it warily. Curiousity got the better of him and he began to unwrap it.

Inside he found a pottery jug in the Roman style with a handful of silver coins engraved with the head of the Emperor Claudius. He had hardly ever seen coins like these before. The find was disappointing, but then something caught Mark's eyes. He saw a glint of gold in the cavern's pond.

Mark looked a bit crestfallen at the discovery of the coins. But then his eyes caught the glint of gold, which he excitedly pointed out to Dinas in the cavern pool. They moved to the edge of the water. Mark studied the water trying to work out how deep the cavern pool was.
It couldn't be too deep he reasoned, given that they could see the glint of gold.

It wasn't deep at all. It looked like it would come up to mid-thigh at the deepest point, but no higher than that. The gold object looked to be long and thin. Mark saw hints of blue amid the gold.
"It looks like jewels, my lord," Dinas said.

Mark nodded at Dinas, a smile breaking out over his face. Maybe they had found what they were looking for!
Mark decided to take the plunge so to speak. He began wading out into the cavern pool to retrieve the gold object.

Water seeped into his breeches. The cold was a shock but it was not icy, just a little unpleasant to begin with. Mark waded forward until he was almost near the middle. He saw the object was long and thin, with sapphires glinting along its length. When he picked it up, he saw that it was a scabbard, empty of a sword, but beautiful and clean.
Telio spoke from the side of the cavern.
"My lord? What have you found?"

Mark held it up to show Teilo, marvelling at the beauty of the thing.
"A scabbard wondrous wrought. It belongs to the sword I think."

Telio came over and looked at it, admiring the delicate etchings in the gold plating. The inside was soft red leather.
"Very beautiful," he said. "We may hope the sword is here also. This cavern goes no further, but we did not examine the second path."

Mark waded out of the cavern pool with the scabbard.
"Then we shall do so at once Teilo." he said. "I feel that if the sword is here, we are close to discovering it."

"YOu may be right, lord," Telio agreed.
He led the way back through the caves to the tunnel they had not yet explored. It ended in a large cavern not unlike the first one they had entered, except that smaller areas led off it on several places on both sides. But these were more like large alcoves than true rooms and had probably been used as sleeping areas when the caverns were still inhabited by the pagans.
"If it's here, we will find it in this cavern," Telio remarked.
He spoke in a whisper, almost reverentially, as he started to look around.

Mark followed his lead, looking around for any object that seemed out of place. He also looked in any fissures that he could see in the cavern walls.

Mark searched the whole cavern with meticulous attention and then, on his second attempt, when he was feeling frustrated, he saw itm a glint of gold deep in what seemed to be a man-made hole in the cavern's wall. It looked a to be perhaps three times of a man's fist but inside there was definitely what appeared to be a sword hilt. The hole seemed to go in deep but he couldn't tell if the blade was attached.

"Dinas! Teilo!" Mark hissed excitedly. "I think we've found it."
He reached in carefully and somewhat gingerly with his left hand to gently grasp the hilt. As his hand closed around it, he gave a gentle tug.
