"Do you know if the castle is running low on supplies?" Dinadan asked.

"No," Arthur sighed. "The messenger didn't tell me that was so, and he might well have been put on low rations before his escape if that was the case, but it is possible. I would imagine, with a siege, that running out of food is always a danger. King Leodegrance couldn't possibly know how long it would take us to come relieve the siege. So, I think we must assume they will be rationing their food now, if they weren't before."

Dinadan sighed. "Then I suppose you are correct, we may not have time to wait for further aid."

"I don't think we should risk it anyway," Arthur admitted. "I want to relieve the siege as soon as possible. I'd like to send a message but I'm not sure we can do that."

"No, that would likely be impossible, a bird could easily be shot down, and a man would never be able to reach the castle." Dinadan replied.

"Yes. Some druids and sorcerors can transform into birds, but they can be hurt as easily as actual birds," Arthur sighed. "I know, because Merlin transformed me into a bird when I was younger, and I hurt myself. It's hard though to not be able to travel faster. I wish we had Merlin or Morgan with us. Surely they could find us a secret magical way to reach Cameliard."

"You were a bird?" Dinadan seemed shocked. "What was it like, being able to fly?"

"Wonderful. It was freedom, Dinadan, like nothing I have ever known before or afterwards," Arthur replied. "It was truly magical."

"Well yes, usually a man becoming a bird is magical." Dinadan joked.

"Yes. But I don't know how else to describe it. You can't imagine, unless you've done it yourself," Arthur explained.

"Yes, I cannot imagine what it would be like to fly, did you find it frightening though?" Dinadan asked.

"At first. I thought I was going to fall. I did a bit but Archimedes helped me. You have to get used to the feeling of gliding and being higher up than you can imagine. And it's fast too."

"What sort of bird were you?" Dinadan asked. "Were you allowed to choose?"

"Oh, yes. I was a bird twice. First I was a sparrow and then I wanted to try being a bird of prey after one almost ate me, so then I was a peregrine falcon," Arthur said, blithely casual of the fact that he had almost been killed.

"What!? It thought you were simply a normal bird?" Dinadan exclaimed. "Did Merlin not take any precautions that would prevent such a thing from happening?"
