"You appreciate it so much you order the flogging of those who display it." Galahad commented.

Vortimer laughed.
"Swear to serve me and I'll reward you instead. I have need of brave men."

"If I were to serve you, I'd be betraying my current liege." Galahad pointed out. "Bravery and treachery cannot exist at the same time."

"True enough but if every man stayed loyal to the first fool he served, nobody would ever prosper," Vortimer replied. "I could offer you lands, a bride of royal blood, almost anything you could think of."

Galahad shook his head. "How could you trust I'd never betray you? A man who has sinned once will sin again."

"A fair point, but what king ever trusts another man entirely? Only a foolish one."
Vortimer sighed.
"Fine, then, let us assume you are not willing to do what is to your own advantage."

Galahad nodded. "That is a fair assumption."

"As you wish. Now tell me, is it Leodegrance to whom I must apply for your ransom? Unlike the princesses, you are of no uyse to me rotting here."

Galahad decided it would be in the best interests of the others if he lied. "Yes, he is my liege."

"I will send word, then. But I warn you, if Leodegrance does not pay, you will be executed."

"Very well." Galahad replied, knowing that at the very least he would have a few days to escape.

Vortimer walked out without another word. The guard kicked Galahad and followed.
He was then left in the dark for a while.

Some time later, however, he heard someone shouting and cursing somebody else in God's name right outside his cell.

Galahad scowled and moved toward the door in order to observe what was happening.

A fair-haired man in a black robe was being held by two men dressed like the one who had been in Galahad's cell with Vortimer. It was he who threatened the men with divine retribution. He had a strange accent.
"God will strike you down for your sins! Take your hands off me. I have committed no crime."

"Release him, you knaves!" Galahad ordered from behind the door of his cell, angered by their treatment of the seemingly religious man.
