He has only stubble on his face and beard, ritually shaved with his dagger. He has a large scar running through his left eye earned in King Vortigern’s final battle against King Uther. He is almost always in blood red plate and otherwise favors clothes of similar color. He wields a giant greatsword forged from the same red steel.
Personal History:
The life of Sir Ruber, the man that would become infamously known as Sir Ironside the Red Knight, began in the faraway nation of Luxembourg. He was born in a region knowns as the Red Lands, named for their red iron-laden earth. The Red lands were famous for their high-quality steel armaments and for breeding exceptional soldiers to wield them. Their main exports were armor, weapons, and mercenary knights.
Sir Ruber has become the most infamous of these men. He was born the third of five boys, but outsized his brothers from an early age. A vicious child, he quickly learned from bullying his siblings that oftentimes the threat of violence was all it took to get what he wanted. Training was a daily and grueling ordeal in the Red Lands. Knights were expected to attain martial excellence so they could gain entry into a mercenary company and be sold by the rulers of Luxembourg to neighboring kingdoms to fight in foreign wars. Ruber and his brothers were eventually accepted into their kingdom’s most elite mercenary company, the Red Knights. They sold their services to nations around Western Europe; fighting battles, putting down revolts, and even fighting invading creatures like giants and dragons. Through ferocity in battle and prowess with a blade, Ruber became an officer and eventually the leader of the Red Knights. He earned the nickname “Ironside” as a joke from his men because he was known to never be without a weapon at his side, even when he slept.
When the news reached the Red Lands that King Vortigern of England was amassing an army of Saxons and mercenaries in preparation for a war against King Uther, Ruber eagerly joined the Red Knights to the tyrant’s cause. Ruber’s vicious and militant nature fit in well in Vortigern’s court and he soon found himself leading the van of the army, with his four brothers at his side. After a few early victories Ruber found himself showered with riches and glory.
But all good things must come to an end, and so they did for Sir Ruber. At what would become the final battle between Uther and Vortigern, the two armies clashed on the banks of a frozen river. Ruber led his Red Knights forwards in a mighty charged, their crimson armor in stark contrast with the snowy plains. After the bloody haze of battle, Ruber awoke with a deep gash over his eye surrounded by the dead and broken bodies of his brothers. He was the only survivor of the Red Knights. Vortigern had been slain in the battle and the war lost.
Disgraced and alone, Ruber discarded his birth name and took up the moniker given to him by his slain brothers, Sir Ironside. Stranded in a foreign land, he wandered for a time robbing travelers for food and coin. Eventually he came upon a destroyed village strewn with dead bodies. Standing in the middle of the carnage was a young sorceress, beautiful in her fury. Having spent a life devoted to warfare, Ironside had never seen such a perfect sight. Whether through enchantment or lustful free will, Ironside took a knee amidst the ashes of the town and swore to serve the woman he came to know as Hallewes.
He travelled at her side during her journeys and helped her in taking back her stronghold at Cerden from invading knights. He hung the dead knights from a nearby tree as a warning to all who would dare oppose his lady. Sir Ironside serves her to this day as the last Red Knight.
