Personal History: Tristan was born in 570, the son of King Meliodas of Lyonesse and Elizabeth of Cornwall. His mother died bearing him. His father married as his second wife Blanche princess of Brittany. When Tristram was a child he fell very ill with rumours that his stepmother had tried to poison him, so her own sons could inherit Lyonesse. Tristram showed a forgiving and compassionate nature by pleading for her life, when she was accused. Not willing to risk a war with his brother-in-law Hoel of Brittany, Meliodas decided to send Tristram into France under the tutorship of Gouvernail, a former master of arms at Tintagel, who consequently became Tristram's loyal and competent squire. He remained there for seven years, until at the age of 17, he returned to Britain - this time (with his father's permission) to the court of his mother's brother Mark, where his bearing and fighting skills were well received. Tristram, probably partly due to his close familial relationship with King Mark, quickly rose to the title of King's Champion. It was here also that he first encountered Sir Dinadan, the son of a minor Cornish noble who was to become his great friend and companion. Dinadan was gentle, wise and courteous, a good knight on horseback and the merriest knight amongst fellowship - qualities that appealed to the dashing Ser Tristram.
