"Of course," Gawain agreed. "I used to do the same as a boy. I hated having my father's men watching over me, thought I could take care of myself. It's hard to accept that our parents just want to protect us when we're young, isn't it?"

Dina nodded.
"It is just the way. I would do all I could to get away from Fathers men but the time I wanted nay, needed them there was the time that I had got away from them." She grinned mischeviously at the memory. "Sometimes it was worth it though,"

"Oh yes? So when was it worth it?" Gawain queried.

Dina gave a wicked grin and shook her head. "You will have to find that out another day Sir." She said. "Why would you try and get away from your fathers men?"

"Why do you think? To do things I thought my father would not approve of, and make sure his men didn't report it to him. Children don't like to think their parents are following their every move, do they? And the closer you get to adulthood, the worse it feels. At least it was like that for me."

"I got more used to it as I got older, but mayhaps its because I am female that the men thought they had to spend the time with me more."

"Yes, I expect so. Women are usually guarded more closely, to protect your virtue. We men are spared that," Gawain said with a laugh. "Indeed, we're encouraged to lose our virtue at a young age."

"Really? How so?" She asked her head cocked to the side. "Is it like one of your growing up rituals?"

"In a sense, yes. Officially it's not, but a young man is expected toi lay with a few girls of common birth before he marries. I don't know if it's the same in Christian lands, but it's certainly that way in Lothian and other pagan realms. Then again, young men of royal birth are highly prized in the Beltane rites," he said with a grin. "What common girl wouldn't want to bear a king's grandchild?"

Dina just smiled "Hen women are cast aside if the do such things before marriage." she clicked her Tongue "Have you any children sir?"

Gawain laughed.
"None. A couple of bastards, that's all. I gave the mothers coin to take care of them. It's not uncommon."

"Occasionally, when I'm at home. My daughter, Ailsa, was conceived Beltane before last so she's not even a year old. My son Derfel is nearly two now. Neither is realy old enough to interest me. Sons are of interest when they are old enough to wield a sword, daughters when they are of age to be betrothed," Gawain said dismissively. "And they are still bastards."

"My brother is a bastard and he is back home watching over Fathers affairs." Dina said. "Of course Father intends for Lamerok to have Listeneise eventually but Percival is there now."

"Oh. I've not met Percival, of course. It's true that a king's bastard can rise high. Sir Mordred seems likely to do well for himself, after all. I hope th same will be said of your brother Percival. Are you fond of him?"
