Dinadan smiled as he mounted his horse, glad that he had relieved some of the tension.

Some days later, the group arrived in the country known as Sorestan. Little was known about it save that it was one of the Saxon kingdoms and thus hostile. The land was a mixture of flatlands and hills, with copses scattered about but fortunately for the group, no dense forest. It was here that Arthur released the prisoner, sending him off unarmed and then riding away. Once he was sure the prisoner was well out of sight, Arthur said to his companions "He knows which direction we've come in, so I think we should change course a little. Either to the northeast or northwest towards Wales. It will delay us a little, maybe, but we will be safer if the prisoner can't guess where we've gone."

Dina still didnt agree with the decision to let the man go free but said nothing about it
"Which is the lesser danger?" She asked.

Arthur shrugged/
"I don't know. I've never travelled this far north. Gawain knows the territory better than I do."
"I've never entered Wales but I know that the eastern Saxon kingdoms are dangerous. But I know them a little at least. But, if we travel alongside the Welsh border, we risk getting caught up in fights between the Saxons and the Welsh. But we will get to Listeneise more quickly that way. Then we can travel through friendly country until we reach Cambernic."

Merlin had remained silent as the group debated the fate of the prisoner. There were some lessons Arthur had to learn without his aid.
While they were debating, he waved his hands over Gawain's wounds, doing his best to heal them and prevent infection. (Healing-Apprentice)
"Whichever way you decide to go, I will use my magic to cover our tracks. The Saxons are renown for their tracking, but my spell should give even their best scouts pause." (Enchanting-Grantmaster/Elemental Magic-Expert)

Unfortunately for Gawain, Merlin's spell failed. It did no damage but nor did it heal the wounds. "Thank you for trying," Gawain murmured. "I'll live with the pain." "We'll go along by the Welsh border though not cross into Wales," Arthur decided. As they set off, Merlin uesd his elemental powers to make the earth loosen and fill their tracks with dirt. He had hoped to cover them with grass where appropriate but it seemed he had got a word of the incantation wrong. He managed to fill the tracks enough that they would not be spotted unless an especially skilled tracker arrived, but he could not eradicate all trace by covering them with grass. Arthur, however, seemed perfectly happy with what Merlin was able to do, and smiled over at his friend and tutor. "Well done, Merlin. I don't know what we should do without you." OOC - sorry, everyone seems to be rolling badly at the moment The track covering spell will be Elemental because it involves earth

"Well you will have to learn, my king. This old man will not be around forever." Merlin replied with a chuckle.

"You taught me well, but I am no sorceror," Arthur sighed. "I tried to learn a simple spell once. when I was but a boy. I never could. So I would always need you, even if I became the wisest man in all the world."

"Then you will have to learn to survive without my magic, Your Grace." the magician replied with a kindly smile. "Though there are some sorcerers that have the power to live forever, I have no intention on being one of them."

"But I won't live forever either," Arthur said. "Even though sometimes I'd quite like to. I know perfectly well that all men die. My sister is a powerful sorceress, I know, but not all the Christians give her the respect they should. And I'm not ready to give up my old friend."

"Then it is a good thing I don't intend to leave this world for a long time to come." Merline said reassuringly. "Though the Saxons may have ideas to the contrary."

"Yes, but we shan't let them have you," Arthur said.
Up in the distance, they could see a man on horseback.
"Someone should go and see who that is," Arthur said. "Any volunteers?"

Arthur seemed hesitant as Dina spoke. He looked to Merlin for help.
"Are you sure, Dina? He might be armed."
