The women stared at her and one of them dropped a curtsey. As she did so, she dropped her basket of dirty clothing and, cursing, bent to pick it up. The other woman looked at Hallewes.
"Who're you? You're not one of us nor one of them druids either."

"I am just a traveller." Hallewes replied. She bent to help the woman pick up her things.
"I have come to ask for some cheese and wine to help us on our journey."

"We don't give anything to strangers for nothing," the woman who hadn't dropped her basket said.
"But she's helping me," the other said. "Not all strangers are bad."
"That's as maybe, but still a stranger, and we have only enough to live off," the first speaker replied. "So what you got, traveller woman?"

"What do you need here?" Hallewes asked, she finished helping and stood. "I can try my best, but we are simple travellers."

Meldryn held back, willing to let Hallewes take on the work.

Leaving the laundress and children to their own devices, the other woman led Hallewes and her companions to the fields and there Hallewes learned to milk the sheep.

Several hours later, when the sheep were all milked, the woman turned to Hallewes.
"Now what is it you wished for, some cheese?"
