"You think you can defeat him? How can you be sure; you've never even met the man." Dinadan said, choosing to ignore Palomides' brief expression.

"I cannot be sure," Palomides answers. His expression seems to imply that it is an irrelevant question. "But it would not matter. It would be His Grace the King who would need to fight this Pybba, or else he would simply appoint a champion of his own."

"I think it is a foolish king who deliberately engages in single combat to decide the fate of a nation. Or in my case, several nations," Arthur said. "I could not do it, no matter how cowardly it might seem. So yes, I would have to appoint a champion. But I don't know if Pybba is quite foolish enough to do it if I will not."

Not so confident in God's support now, it seems, Palomides thought. He did not know whether to be relieved that the king was not a fanatic or annoyed at his hypocrisy.
"He will not," Palomides responds. He did not know this Pybba even by reputation, but experience with other such men told him that he would not. "If his champion is a man of influence, it may be worth it anyhow. You will lose little if I die, but the foe will be demoralized if some son or lord of their king is slain." Palomides did not mind stating the reality of his own position. Foreigners such as himself were never trusted or respected until they earned it, and earning such respect always entailed risk.

"You are a man of courage, Sir Palomides, but it's too great a risk. I don't think I've even seen you fight," Arthur admitted. "I don't think any king would allow it."

Palomides could not see what Arthur would be risking, other than Palomides' own life, but it was not his place to lecture his patron. "As you command, my lord."

"I wish I could say yes, but there is not only my own kingdom to think of," Arthur said. "And besides, I would like to see you fight before I agree to something of that nature."

"He could fight me." Dinadan offered. "I'm not as good as an enemy champion, but it would allow you to determine his ability with a blade."

Arthur looked from one man to the other, his expression dubious.
"I could allow that, but it would have to be with blunted weapons or to first blood or something. I don't want either of you being hurt. If Sir Palomides is willing, though."

It struck Palomides as somewhat foolish to risk injury before a battle, but if that was what the king wished, he supposed he could oblige. "If that is what you require, my lord," Palomides replies.

"I'd prefer if it were blunted weapons." Dinadan said. "I'll do more than enough bleeding in the near future, I suspect."

"I do not own a blunted sword," the idea of such a thing seemed pointless, "But if you can find me one, I will fight you."

Dinadan glanced over at Arthur. "Do you know where we would be able to find training swords?"

(OOC: Dinadan asked him where blunt weapons could be found)
