"Which direction are we heading?" Hallewes asked Meldryn Mawr when they came ashore.

"West. We make for Ireland," Mawr answered. "We will need to travel across the land to the coast and there we shall take ship for Ireland. It will be safer than drawing attention to ourselves by sorcery."

"I agreed, I would rather not be known yet." Hallewes said softly.

"Then that is what we must do. You shall be my daughter, Hallewes, and Sir Ironside our protector. We will be the last remnants of a noble family seeking refuge from the wild northern tribes."

"That is a passable story." Hallewes confirmed. "I am sure that we can deal with any trouble that comes our way."

"Of course we will but we must use our sorcery only in times of dire need," Mawr warned. "That is the safest way, until we reach Ireland."

"Works for me." Ironide added with a vicious grin, tossing his returned greatword from hand to hand with childlike glee.

Mawr eyed Ironside with increasing interest. He had thought of the man as just a brute with a sword but he was beginning to be intrigued.
"OUr safety will be in your hands, Sir Ironside," he said. "Make sure you are up to the task."

Hallewes gave a lazy smile "You need not worry on that count, Sir Ironside has helped me through most of my travels when I do not want to use my power"

"That is good to know," Mawr replied. "It has been a long time since I was in the company of a fighting man. Indeed, it is long since I had the company of a living mortal at all."

"Well I wont have you unable to defend yourself if we run into trouble." Ironside replied, taking off the sheathed seax at his belt and reverently handing it to the old man. "It might not be as fancy as raising the dead or shooting fireballs, but it will spill a man's guts as good as any blade."

Mawr handed the blade as delicately as most men would handle an infant. He was careful not to touch the edge.
"An interesting weapon," he said. "There is magic in blades, sir. More than you know. Especially when one practices the necromancer's art. The power of life and death is potent. As I am sure you know."

"Just don't lose it." Ironside remarked, the philosophical insight of Mawr lost on him. "It was a gift from a great warrior...back in a time when that still meant something."

Mawr nodded as he listened.
"I see. May I know the name and rank of the man who gave you the blade?"
