Ironside sees a few flashes of fur as animals flee from him. He realises that he will have to make an effort to catch something.

Ironside sets a simple snare trap, leaving a piece of stale bread in the center as bait.

Nothing comes at first but then a rabbit comes and sniffs at the trap. It catches in the snare.

Ironside uses his seax to cut the rabbit free from the snare and picks up the creature by its neck. The Red Knight brings his catch back to the waiting magicians with a self-satisfied grin.

Meldryn Mawr looked up and nodded in satisfaction.
"Cut its throat and let the blood drain into a bowl. I will say the spell as you do it."

With one clean swipe of his seax and no trace of remorse, Ironside slit the rabbit's throat.

As the blood dripped into a bowl, Mawr began a chant, his voice barely above a whisper. The blood fell, thick and pungent, staining Ironside's fingers.
"Thank you, sir."
Mawr stirred his finger through the bowl, still chanting. The blood seemed to glow for a moment but then it was back to normal. Mawr picked up the bowl and drank. Blood stained his chin as he did so but soon the bowl was empty. Mawr said another spell and as Ironside and Hallewes watched, he grew younger, the years fading away from him. His hair grew darker, the wrinkles melted from his face and his back straightened.

Ironside's mouth involuntarily gaped open as the years fell away from Mawr's aged face. He had seen a great deal of magic in his travels, but this was something new and fascinating.

The necromancer smiled at Ironside. He felt a great deal better now than he had at any time since leaving Ynis Sci, where the magic of his fay bride rejuvenated him.
"A thing of wonder, is it not? Do not worry, Sir Ironside. In time you shall have the sword and do marvels of your own."

"I would hear more of these marvels you speak of." Ironside stated, unable to believe someone as ignorant of magic as himself would ever be able to perform a feat anywhere near as impressive as what he had just witnessed.

"You ask much, for a warrior alone among sorcerors," Meldryn Mawr remarked. "You are impatient, sir. You must learn that nothing is achieved for the asking. It takes hard work. We must find the objects we seek before you may achieve a marvel."
