"Well then, hopefully I have come at an opportune time, if you need the help, though someone who drinks most of the time if perhaps not the best person to help heal people?" Iseult whispered back, thinking in healing an unreliable person is more of a harm to the patient, but Gaius wouldn't let undue harm come to anyone, she was sure. "What would you have me do to begin then?" She asked, returning to her normal speaking voice,

"First, I feel you should begin studying my potions. You will need to learn what is safe and what is poisonous. Fortunately I keep it all labelled, so you will soon learn the names quick enough."

"That is good," Iseult said with a smile "where would I find them so I can start right away?"

Gaius led her over to the potion shelves and handed her a small book with coloured ink drawings.
"Each is labelled but this book will show you which does what, as some of them will not be obvious. The poisons are kept separate from the tonics. Poisons are on the top shelf. Don't touch them until I ask you to, mhy child."

"I won't," Iseult assured the old man with a smile and took the book of him, and then glanced up at the shelves of potions and then back down at the book. "And you remember what each one is and what it does from memory?"

"I do. You will learn, in time," he said. "IYou will find that healing potions are grouped together, poisons likewise. There are a few other things that might be of interest to a young lady, such as herbal rinses to brighten your hair."

Iseult managed to keep the surprised look off her face, just. Was Gaius implying her hair needed brightening? "It makes sense to group them all together, I shall try hard to memorise and remember them all, thank you." She said with a smile, and looked up at one of the potions to try and find it's corresponding section in the book.

The potoin she chose happened to be a milk sleeping draught, pale green in colour. It was grouped with the other sleeping potions, the others of which were of stronger quantity. This section in the book was just ahead of the poisons section. The strongest sleeping draught carried a warning that it could put someone to sleep for good, if the quantities were too strong.

Iseult was surprised such strong sleeping draughts exited, it seemed detrimental in helping people recover, putting them to sleep forever, but that was in excessive doses, she supposed. She put the bottle back, after putting it's effects to it, and trying to commit it to memory and then chose another potion.

The next one she chose was a milky greyish-blue colour. Iseult eventually found it in in the tonics section. Its function was to settle an upset stomach. Similar tonics included something to make a person vomit if they had been poisoned (muddy yellow) and something to something to soothe headaches (pale pink.)

Iseult wrinkled her nose at the idea of inducing vomiting, but thought it was sometimes necessary, for the reasons listed, but it was still very unpleasant, and she did not relish the idea of being around when it ever had to be administered, but there was the greater good to think of. She was glad that these all seemed to be fairly different in colour, it would help a lot if she ever needed to grab one in a hurry, and would notice if she ever got the wrong one. Heaven forfend some poor girl ever got the vomit inducing potion when she only wanted to brighten her hair.
Isuelt smiled slightly at the thought and then put it back to pick up and assess another vial.

This was one of the beauty products. As Gaius had said, it could brighten her hair. It was clear in colour and the instructions cautioned against getting it in the eyes or accidentally consuming it as it was mildly poisonous, though not enough to do serious harm. It appeared to work for hair of all colours. Similar potions included eyedrops to brighten the eyes, pots of mixtures to redden the cheeks and blacken the eyelashes. The latter were in smaller vials than the healing potions, giving Iseult the impression that Gaius was embarrased about including them in the book, but she could guess how such things would be in high demand at Court.

Iseult found it surprising there were such a number of different ones, she couldn't ever imagine using one, but they may be beneficial for older ladies who did not want to appear so old. Even if Iseult knew that there were such things, she thought she would probably be too embarrassed to come and ask for one. It seemed to be a misuse of time and resources making them, but she guessed she might be singing a different song in a few years time.
She looked around for another she could try and match.

The next potion she chose was a tincture of wolfsbane, a deadly poison. The liquid was blackish-purple. Gauis had drawn in a sketch of the flower alongside his sketch of the tincture. As Iseult leafed through the book she saw various other poisons. The most dangerous of all seemed to be a potion made from crushed leaves of deadly nightshade, among other ingredients. The potion was especially deadly because it was clear and scentless with only a mild taste. That made it difficult to detect if poured in a drink or upon cooked food.

Iseult committed the information on the poisons to memory as best she could and then quickly put the vial potion back, remembering that Gaius had said not to touch any of the poisons until he said so. In all honesty she didn't have too much interest in learning about poisons, that seemed to be the opposite of healing people, but it seemed to at least be good to know in case she ever needed to know, so she remembered the names wofsbane and Nightshade, just in case.. She replaced the bottle and then quickly chose another she could spend more time on.
