Mordred slowly walks into the Throne Room. He still wears his travel stained and very dirty clothing and armour.

Arthur was at present discussing matters with his councillors. Geoffrey of Monmouth, the court librarian, broke off in mid-speech as he spotted Mordred. The Throne Room went deadly quiet. Arthur whispered something to Geoffrey, who responded in kind. Arthur turned to Mordred and locked eyes with him. He was young and good-looking, fair of hair and clean-shaven. His gaze had a frankness to it but there was a hint of steel too.
"Come forward," he said. "I am told you are Mordred Pendragon, the son of my father."
The courtiers were all silent, staring at Mordred. Some, like Geoffrey, looked upon Mordred with sympathy. Others were merely curious and a few were hostile.

Merlin entered the throne room, whistling a merry tune as he intruded on the awkward scene. Looking around, he spotted Mordred and raised one of his graying eyebrows in amused curiosity and made his way to Arthur's side.
"So the prodigal son returns!", Merlin said in his gravelly voice with a playful twinkle in his gray eyes, "Some feared you were slain, but I knew to expect better from a son of Uther."

Mordred looks at Arthur up and down, "Sir Mordred Pendragon." Taking a step further standing close to Arthur, "First son of Uther Pendragon and your older brother." a faint smile is upon his face.
Nodding his head to Merlin, "Merlin my respects."

Arthur studied Mordred before he said "I am sorry that we have never met before now. I am close to my foster-brother Kay, but it would have been pleasant to know my blood brother. But we have time to make up for that. Will you take a seat beside me at the Beltane feast?"

Merlin considered Mordred's reply, remembering that the last time they had spoken it had been after Mordred's failed attempt to remove Clarent from the stone, and had not been very respectful at all. There had been a fair about of expletives involved.
Nonetheless, Merlin gave a smile and polite nod in response, staying silent to witness the exchange between the two brothers.

"Of course how could I turn down such an honour brother. Please pray may I ask what happened to you. You were taken at birth correct? I am sorry I do not know more I have been across the channel."

"Yes, I was a tiny babe when Merlin took me to be raised by Sir Ector," Arthur replied.
His voice lost its warmth and was now cool. Clearly he disliked being questioned about his past by the brother he didn't know, especially in front of his councillors.
"I know my own brother would not doubt the truth of my words," he said.

"I would not dream of it, I am simply overjoyed that my brother is alive and will. I bow to the fact that you are Arthur Pendragon son and heir to Uther Pendragon. All I ask is that I am treated as a son of our father."

"That can be arranged," Arthur said carefully, glancing at Merlin before he turned back to Mordred. "Did my father not make provision for you at all?"

Merlin cut in, not wishing to discuss the bargain he made with Uther in order to raise Arthur. The deaths it had led to still haunted him to this day.
"I am confident we can find a stout keep for you to lord over and a place at court, Mordred. Uther would have wanted at least that for his son." he offered.

Mordred put on his best smile, "Thank you brother, Thank you Merlin." After a moments silence, "Do you ask for me to swear my alliegence to you brother?"

"I do," Arthur agreed. "If you do not, we cannot be friends and we would then be enemies. I don't wish that and I am sure you don't either."

Mordred laughs lightly, "You do not need to worry about me Arthur." With a great show Mordred went to one knee, "On my life I do swear to King Arthur Pendragon High King of Britain. I will serve as a faithful and humble Knight for unto my oath is relinquished or death takes me."
