"Good. Your knight will have to bring us back if we get into trouble. Usually you can tell from the way the body flails about," Meldryn explained. "A few minutes more and the ingredients should be dissolved in the wine. Now, Hallewes, it is important to remmber that what you do in the spirit world is done in the mind. You cannot suffer bodily harm unless your body is injured while your mind is away from it. But - and this is important, so pay attention - if your spirit form is slain, your body will die also. So you must make sure that it is not. Do you understand?"
He had taken on the expression and the tone of a teacher and his face was deadly serious.

Hallewes nodded.
"I do not plan to die in either world." She said.

"Of course not, but you must be vigilant, and so must your knight. Now. we will need to drink the potion and lie flat on our backs, facing the sky. And then we have to speak the chant to help our bodies relax."
Meldryn Mawr looked at the potion.
"It is done. Now we must only wait for it to cool."
He lifted the pan off the fire, which he extinguished with a snap of his fingers, and laid the pan down in the grass to cool.

Hallewes watched him. She was quiet for the moment.

The old man looked seriously at her.
"You must promise not to take unnecessary risks in the spirit world. A woman's body is especially vulnerable when she is breeding. I would not want my grandchild to suffer. If you are harmed, the child may be also."

"I will not take any risks." She vowed. "I promised your son I would carry his child with care and I will."

"Good."
He stirred the cooling potion. It was a very dark red, almost black, the wine having changed colour by the addition of the ingredients.
"I warn you, it won't taste pleasant."

"Does anything that is needed to dink?" She asked with a wry smile. She found a cup and brought it over so that they wouldnt need to burn themselves,.

"True enough. It should be cool enough to drink very soon," he said, testing it by dipping his finger in a spoonful. "There will be enough to save for another time too. Child, you know, our meeting has made me realise how I have missed human company except when my wife and children brought our kind home for their own pleasures. Your presence is reminiscent of times in the past when I had an apprentice."

"You had an apprentice?" Hallewes asked. "There is much that I had never heard of you before."

"A long time ago. I can barely recall his face. But it has been an age since I instructed anyone besides my own children. Fay magic is a little different."
The old man sighed.
"The potion should be done now. If you are ready?"

"I am." Hallewes confirmed.
"Did you not get lonely, with only your family?"

"My family would never allow it. They are very talkative and they love me well. It doesn't matter. I chose that life."
He took the cup and filled it with the doctored wine.
"You drink first."

Hallewes accepted the cup and took a drink. She pulled a face at the taste and coughed.

"Don't choke," Meldryn warned. "Drink it all, then give it to me before you lie down."
