"Food would be welcome, but if it is all the same to you I would rather drink water." Galahad replied.

The lord gave him a strange look. Water was as likely to be dirty as clean.
"AS you wish. It will be fetched for you."

Galahad knew that the water might well be dirty, but to him it was a purer substance to drink than wine.
"Thank you." Galahad said, ignoring the looks.

An hour later, they were ready to depart. The lord gave the command to a grizzled knight.
"We are ready, sir," the older man told Galahad. And thank you for helping us."

"It is really nothing more than my duty." Galahad assured him as he mounted his horse. "But you are welcome."

"Duty can be shirked," the knight murmured. "I have known many shirkers in my time. It is good to know the knights of Camelot are not such. Nor are my boys here. I chose from the best."

"I am glad of that." Galahad said. "I do not enjoy sharing the company of shirkers."

"Nor should you. It's not so far from here. We will smoke those bandits one, one way or the other."
His expression was grim and so was his tone. This was one old warrior who did not mean to bow to the bandits. They rode out.

A couple of hours later, the man who had come across the bandits' lair before guided them to it. A dank cave in a lightly forested area.
"'Tis here," he said.
The older knight looked to Galahad.
"What shall we do now?"

Galahad observed the terrain carefully. If this was to be a battlefield he wanted to know where an advantageous position would be.

There was a small stone ridge outside the cave. Not directly outside, a small distance away, but it would give attackers higher ground should they care to use it, perhaps with archers. The area immediately in front of the cave was flat. There was no water, no trees or anything else of particular advantage to either side, but of cousre Galahad couldn't see inside the cave itself.

"Are any of your men archers?" He asked the knight.

"Two," he said, indicating two of the younger men who carried longbows. "We use bows for hunting in these parts, but they are both good shots."

"Do we have any idea how many bandits there are?" Galahad asked.

"A hundred maybe? But they go out in smaller groups to cause more trouble. Won't be so many guarding their lair, though some will be there of course."

"How do you think we should proceed?" Galahad asked. "We could smoke them out, but that could prove dangerous."
