"It could. Perhaps one of us could sneak close and try to get into the cave to see what it is like inside? Or...yes, perhaps smoking them out is the best option."

"No, we should have a better idea of what we are facing before we do anything." Galahad decided. "I will try to get closer to the cave."

"God go with you," the older knight said fervently, performing the sign of the cross. "Don't fight unless you have to."

Galahad nodded. He began to slowly creep forward towards the cave, using what cover he could find. His armor made the task rather awkward, but he was not about to remove it due to the chance of confrontation.
(Use what cover exists to get as close as possible to the cave, additionally attempt to avoid detection)

Either the bandits were busy elsewhere, or they were really stupid, because no-one seemed to be on guard outside as Galahad approached. If there was anyone in the mouth of the cave, Galahad managed to avoid being spotted.
Whe got to the cave itself and looked inside, he saw the light of a single torch. A man was visible, clothed in oddments of armour, with an axe at his side, but he was snoring, his head resting on his bent knees. A wineskin sat on the ground next to him, a trickle of red had leaked out the mouth. The torch showed a couple of stalactites but not much else. Galahad would have to sneak into the cave itself to learn more.

Galahad glanced around before making up his mind. What information he had was not enough to risk the lives of six other men. He slowly made his way into the cave, careful not to disturb the sleeping guard.

The guard mumbled in his sleep but didn't move. Galahad inched forward, slowly, having to go through the dim area of the cave entrance. It widened into a large cavern after a little distance, and Galahad could see that since the entrance was narrow, the last thing he and his companions would want would be to get caught inside the cave. Meanwhile, as he crouched in the entry to the large cavern, he saw perhaps twenty men sitting about. Some of them were asleep. Others played dice and drank or told bawdy tales. None of them looked anywhere near Galahad, fortunately.

Galahad made note of the approximate number of men and their varying degrees of intoxication before sneaking back out of the cave.

When he got back, the older knight was waiting anxiously.
"Well, Sir Galahad? Do we have the numbers to fight them?"

"There are around twenty of them, but several are intoxicated." Galahad replied. "If we can funnel them through the small entrance of the cave, they will not be able to use all of their men. Alternatively we could create some kind of trap at the entrance and smoke them out."

"Aye, I prefer that thought. I want to risk my men no more than I must, though I agree with our lord that the bandits must be slain."
He thought for a moment.
"Perhaps fire arrows?"

Galahad thought for a moment. "I suppose we could start a fire at the entrance of the cave. It would force them out, and any who survive the wall of flame, we can deal with. It is hardly chivalrous, yet these men have forfeited the right to a honorable death."

"So they have, and we both have duties of our own to return to. These men are outside the law. Let them die like vermin," the older man said.

Galahad nodded. "Then we had best start collecting dry wood. Make sure that someone watches the entrance of the cave while the rest of us do so."

"I'll have our archers do that. They have keen eyes."
The older knight set the two archers to watch the cave and instructed the others to begin collecting wood. Soon they had a decent sized pile to use.
"I've flint and tinder," the older knight informed Galahad. "It's lucky it's not raining."
